Meat and Hormones

Unless you are buying Organic meat almost all of the meat we consume has synthetic growth hormones and other chemicals that could be harmful to us.

Synthetic growth hormones are given to cattle and all other animals that we eat for one reason. Money! It's all about the money. Always is!

By giving a calf that weights around 80 pounds synthetic growth hormones, the rancher can cut months from the time it takes that calf to reach 1,200 pounds. Thus he saves money and time. Those are the two things that get ranchers and their accountants excited, that's also called profit.

Growth hormones not only cause the animals the grow faster it also produces leaner meat which also makes the meat worth more.

This is not something new. As far back as the thirties research has shown that estrogen effected the growth rate in both poultry and cattle.

So effective are these hormones that the average chicken now goes from hatch to slaughter in six to eight weeks. All that time not leaving their one foot by one foot space. No wonder they are tender, they could not use their muscles if they had to.

The concern of scientists and I hope you as a consumer, is that these hormones will remain in the meat and be passed along to the consumer who eats the meat. Girls today are reaching puberty at and increasingly younger age. It is strongly suspected that this is caused by the hormones being found in todays meat.

The studies done on this subject have been inconclusive due to the fact that the animals themselves naturally produce some of the hormones making it hard to determine how much is natural and how much is from the hormonal pellets they stick behind the cattle's ear.

The only safe way to avoid this situation is to eat only meat that is certified organic. This is meat that is raised with out the hormones or steroids. The cattle are feed only grains that have not been contaminated by pesticides.

Some grocery stores are beginning to carry the certified organic meats. I know down here in Florida Publics food stores are carrying the organic meat as well as organic dairy products and produce.

You can even buy organic meat through the internet and have it delivered directly to your home. Heres is one of the best sources for organic meat.

As long as ranchers try to get cattle to slaughter faster we will need to be concerned at the methods they are using and what it means for our family's safety. The one sure way to eliminate the concern is to purchase and use only organic meat.

Good eating!
