Healthy Snacks For Toddlers
Healthy snacks for toddlers aren’t just important to maintain good health today. Your toddler’s mind and body develops rapidly and sets the stage for their future. The foods of preference and comfort foods are decided at this stage of life and you can affect their health for years to come simply by planning their meals and snacks carefully.
Healthy snacks don’t need to take a lot of time to prepare but even if they did, the effect on your child’s future is worth the extra effort.
Children this age don’t have access to anything but what you give them. It’s important to remain firm and only offer foods that improve their health in the future. Some children are fussy eaters and this makes selecting the snack a bit more difficult but the snacks can add the nutrition they might have missed by refusing mealtime foods.
Healthy snacks for toddlers are an important part of their nutrition. Young children can’t eat enough foods necessary during a meal to provide all the
nutrition they require. They simply do better of a diet that consists of several smaller meals throughout the day or the traditional three meals supplemented with healthy snack foods. The smaller meals timed with healthy snacks set the pattern for a lifetime of eating less at meals and more frequently throughout the day. This pattern is recommended by many physicians, diet gurus and nutritionists as a method of weight and blood sugar control.
Presentation is as important for toddlers as it is for adults. In fact, it might even be more important. Like the haughty restaurants, moms need to make the snack as interesting as possible for the toddler. At this age, inquisitive minds need to fill their senses as well as their stomachs when it comes to meals or snacks. The more attractive and brightly colored the snack, the more likely your toddler remains focused on the task, eating.
A few ideas for healthy snacks include bite size bits of fruit like kiwis, melons, grapes, bananas, peaches or mango. Combine as many colored fruits as possible for them to snack upon and use the time to not only feed their body but their mind as well. Name the fruit and the color as they pick up each piece. Serve the fruit sprinkled liberally atop cottage cheese or combine the cottage cheese with applesauce for another toddler taste treat.
Try various types of cheese for snacks for your toddler. If you use string cheese, cut the strings into smaller pieces before you serve the toddler. Use miniature cheese cubes as another taste treat and serve it with a few grapes. Melt shredded cheese on a soft taco shell and slice into bite size portions. Fill celery with plain cream cheese or mixed with grated yellow cheese and offer the celery to your hungry toddler as a snack.
Peanut butter added to most any type of fruit or vegetable is normally welcomed by most toddlers. Fill a piece of celery with peanut butter and top it with raisins, apple bits or bits of banana and they’ll make it disappear in minutes. You can make a hollow in a piece of apple and fill that void with peanut butter too.
Other healthy snacks include energy balls made with
honey, peanut butter, grated carrots and wheat germ. You can mix in cream cheese, roll it into a log instead or substitute rolled oats for the wheat germ. No matter what way you serve this or other healthy snacks for toddlers, its one sure method to keep energy level though the day, keep your toddler happy and make him healthy at the same time.
