Food for good prostate health is important to the elderly male population, as they do not seem to consume as many of the foods that encourage it, as elderly women might. The reason for this may be that women are more sensitive to their weight, and wrinkle appearance as they age, and consume more of the right types of food.
Many elderly males suffer prostate problems due to an enlarged prostate, that blocks the urethra and makes urination difficult and often times can lead to bladder and kidney infections from bacteria that is not cleansed from the system. While elderly women may suffer bladder and kidney infections, enlarged prostate problems cause problems for elderly males and seem more prominent.
For example, food items that contain Quercetin and lycopene, which have positive effects in cancer prevention are found in red wines and grapes, leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and cabbage. It can also be found in citrus fruits such as grapefruit, berries and melons, and tomatoes. Antioxidants are effective against aging skin, and are also good for prostate health and can be found in teas, berries and many vegetables. Basically, a diet full of
fruits, vegetables and grains are recommended for good prostate health.
Drinking plenty of clear liquids, broths and juices, help keep the bladder and kidneys flowing, and help the urethra process fluids past the prostate gland. It used to be said that a can of
tomatoes a week were a way to help prevent prostate cancer, however, that has been found to be untrue. Tomato juice is certainly a good way to get Vitamin C, and fruit and vegetable juices help enlarged prostate problems.
Researchers have found that daily
meat consumption triples the risk of prostate enlargement, drinking milk regularly nearly doubles it, and a lacks of vegetables can quadruple the odds of prostate enlargement. Most physicians have found that starting a low-fat, vegetarian diet is the easiest way to relieve prostate enlargement. In addition, limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption is recommended. Some doctors have recommended taking supplements such as Saw Palmetto, Cold pressed flaxseed oil, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin E.
Since enlargement of the prostate gland is essentially caused by increased cell production caused by testosterone and hormone production which stimulate the prostate cells, it has been found to start in males around 30, and continue up to 50 years old. Since a diet high in protein and meat stimulate testosterone levels, the best diet would be one that includes rice, grains, beans and other vegetables to keep prostate cell growth minimized and growth of the gland at a minimum.
While surgical removal of the prostate gland is an option if the problem has become major, you may never have to worry about a large prostate if you are a vegetarian, or have had a diet rich in vegetables and grains. It has been scientifically proven that the best
food for good prostate health would be one that is from the vegetable or grain food groups, and not from meat or dairy.
