Fluoride Toothpaste - Healthy Fake
If you take a few minutes the next time you brush your teeth, you’ll notice a little warning on the back of your toothpaste. The warning says that if you accidentally swallow the toothpaste, call the Poison Control Center right away.
Most people don’t read the information on the toothpaste tube and spend years brushing never knowing that some of the ingredients in the toothpaste are toxic and some actually stop the remineralization of the teeth.
Studies on fluoride began as far back as the 1850’s when German citizens sued local smelters because of the health damage they suffered from the effects of the waste material fluoride. It was a big problem for the aluminum industry giants who produced heavy amounts of the toxic waste in the 1920’s.
It also caused distress to the project managers on the Manhattan Project, producers of the atomic bomb. The production of the bomb left the toxic waste material fluoride created when they made the atomic bomb. When the papers of the Manhattan Project became public record, there was a passage in one that sent chills through the spines of readers.
The scientists that worked under the auspices of the Manhattan Project received memos to find “evidence useful in litigation” in the event that locals sued because of health damage from the fluoride. All the beneficial information about fluoride came from a few reports.
One was by a health official and ordered by the Treasury secretary, Mellon in the 1930’s who owned ALCOA aluminum. It studied small towns that had natural fluoride in the water and found the people had fewer cavities than those that didn’t have fluoride. While the study had many flaws, it also ignored the findings of others that indicated the dangers of fluoride.
At the same time, the government recommended fluoride for the water, news from returning soldiers revealed stories of stockpiled fluoride at concentration camps. When the soldiers asked the Nazi soldiers what it was for, they indicated that they added to the water to keep prisoners docile.
While studies indicate that since cities started using fluoride in the water, the incidence of dental carries has dropped, one dentist that was the leading proponent for fluoride doesn’t buy the argument. Studies also show that areas where no fluoride was in the water had improved dental health.
John Colquhoun, Auckland, New Zealand, the leading proponent of fluoride says he’s changed his mind. After reading all the studies, he noticed that the improvement in the teeth came long before
fluoridated toothpaste and water and started in the 1930’s with the advent of refrigeration, more fruits and vegetables in the homes and a better standard of living. He notes that there are too many studies that indicate the dangers of fluoride, which include dental fluorosis where the teeth discolor and are malformed from too much fluoride. Studies on these individuals show an increase in bone cancer in men.
One study in China show children with dental fluorosis have a 10-point lower IQ. Studies also indicate that the fluoride crosses through the placenta and may affect the fetus.
The glycerin in the toothpaste that make it creamy also comes with a price. The tooth actually repairs itself. That’s one of the reasons that manufacturers and scientists believe that the fluoride works to protect the teeth. They believe that it works with the natural remineralization process to fill in the small pits so that dental carries can’t reach the pulp to do further damage.
While the jury is still out on that, even if fluoride does help, the glycerin blocks the remineralization process. The glycerin forms a coating on the teeth that blocks any reminerization.
A tape on YouTube tells about not only toothpaste but also the amount of fluoride it compares to in the water. There is an old phrase about too much of a good thing. Even if fluoride is good for you, a glass of water contains the same amount of fluoride that’s in a pea size serving of toothpaste.
Every day we drink and give small children glasses of water and believe we’re doing the right thing for their health, but the studies on fluoride are still contradictory and many are buried or scoffed as foolish because of the firmly entrenched belief that fluoride is the do all, save all in the world of dentistry.
I decided to use
tooth soap a long time ago, so I no longer need to wory about fluoride or any of the other questionable ingredients in toothpaste.
Here's a great video on toothsoap:
