Healthy Snack

No matter whether you're on diet or simply eat with nutrition as your main goal, a healthy snack is just as important as any of your meals. A snack can be one way to add extra vitamins and minerals to your diet without adding excess extra calories when you take a few minutes to plan ahead or time. However, many people omit snacks when they plan diets or develop a new eating regimen and often find themselves languishing in front of the snack machine at work , grabbing candy bars when they're about to pay for gas or eating the first item they see when they get home without even considering its nutritional or caloric value.

When you plan for a snack, you don't wait for your hunger to grow to the point where the dog's kibbles look good, you have the perfect mid meal snack ready to curb your appetite and at the same time, supply you with extra nutrients without a caloric overload. No matter whether you think, you'll be hungry or not, any diet plan should include snacks. Occasionally, these snacks are often substitutes for a real meal to many busy people that simply don't have the time to stop for a formal meal; the snacks may even be a substitute.

When planning your healthy snacks, you need to keep a few key requirements in mind. If you're on the go, the snack needs to be easy to carry with you. For those that have a refrigerator in their workplace whether it is your home or an office, there's many different snacks you can make ahead and stocked for action. Of course, a small cooler for snacks is also another option for people on the road. Many of these are slightly larger than the old "Happy Days" lunch pail you used to carry to school but are perfect when you pop in a freezer pack to keep your snacks cool until mid afternoon.

Healthy snacks should be tasty but also give you as much nutritional bang for your buck as possible. In order to do this, you should have several different types of snacks available to not only vary your diet but also broaden your nutritional intake.

Finally, healthy snacks shouldn't "taste healthy." Anyone that's ever been on a diet or sought to improve the level of nutrition in his or her food knows exactly what that means. Some foods taste like you're munching on cardboard or even worse a multiple vitamin. Of course, that type of snack curbs your appetite but you'll avoid eating it and find something else as a substitute.

It's not that difficult to create your own list of healthy snacks and prepare them ahead. While they don't have to be low calorie, if you're watching your weight, keep the snacks between 100 and 200 calories. Fresh fruits are often one choice for snacks. You don't need a container for an apple or orange since it already comes prepackaged, but other healthy snacks are not only fun but also delicious.

Make your own trail mix from nuts and dried fruit to carry with you. Air pop some popcorn and keep it in small easy to carry plastic bags for transport. Fresh veggies make great snacks because they add extra nutrients without extra calories. If you have a few calories to spare, fill celery with peanut butter or make a dip from yogurt or hummus with your favorite spices and herbs. Put a banana on a stick, spread on some peanut butter, roll it in granola or crushed walnuts and freeze for a quick treat for you or your family.

A healthy snack can be the redeeming feature of any type of diet, whether it's for better nutrition or weight loss.
